About Ramdurg

The city of Lord Rama, Ramdurg or Ramdurga is a town located in Belgaum district in the state of Karnataka. The city was believed to be united to territory of India during the period of March 8, 1948 and united in the state of Karnataka. The city was named in the name of Lord Rama as it is believed that Lord Rama stayed in the place during his exile. The place is located in the bank of Malaprabha river. 

During the reign of British this state of Ramdurg was under Bombay Presidency before uniting to the territory of India. Around 3.57 sq km area is covered by the town Ramdurg. As per the census recorded in 1901, the town had a population of 37,848 and later the population count was upgraded to 39,841 in the census recorded in 2011. The total count was divided as 11,528 males and 11,212 as female count. The ratio of males to females is 971 i.e. sex ratio of the city. The total numbers also has around 13% under the age of six. When it comes to literacy part, the total average of the town came to around 63% more than the average count of the country. The male literate people is 75% and female literate is 55%.
The villages that come under the administration of the town are historic places. Many fairs and festivals are celebrated in these villages which drives huge crowds across the district and city.

The famous Godachi Fair is one of the major fair of the city. This fair is usually organized during the month of December. Moharm festival is another major festival celebrated in Yarikittur village of the Ramdurg district.  Sureban and Manihal are the twin cities in the town which are famous for their historic and cultural values and establishments. Mythologically, it is said that Shabari was waiting for Lord Rama in this place where a mata Shabari has been established and its original name is Shabari vana. The place is where ChitaBasma of father of Mahatma Gandhi has been kept. The other place in the town Manihal is well known for Shree Shivanand and Shree Atmand Swamiji’s Ashrama.

The other village, Sunnal, in the city is where thousands of devotees throng to famous Maruthi Temple. The idol of Lord Hanuman is believed to be there from ancient times and people visiting the temple believe to get double blessings from Lord Hanuman. It is popularly known as Sunnal Hanumappa. Bears are found in the forest are of this village called as Sunnal Karadi or Sunna Kaddi.

Kannada is the official language of the city. The hilly area, river, sugar factories in the city made it famous in the state. Those who love trekking, this city is best for them. The city also has many forts where many tourists across the district and state throng.
